Prius drivers in Japan and the U.S. have complained of a short delay before the brakes kick in — a flaw Toyota says can be fixed with a software programming change.  Toyota said Tuesday it is recalling 170,000 Prius hybrid cars in Japan for braking problems and will soon disclose details of its global plans for a fix.

After initially downplaying complaints by owners that 2010 Prius brakes could release unexpectedly, the troubled Japanese manufacturer acknowledged last week that it had quietly instituted a “fix” to solve the problem with the sedans that it has built since sometime in January.How far back do potential braking problems with the Toyota Prius go?
